Texas Impaired Driving Data

Impaired driving is a major concern in Texas – 1,053 fatalities in 2024 were due to an alcohol-related crash. While current data sources can provide glimpses into components of the impaired driving problem, TTI and the TRCC Impaired Driving Database Subcommittee are working to integrate and link these disparate data sources and work towards a comprehensive driving while intoxicated tracking system.  The ultimate goal is for data from crash, driver’s license, criminal history, citation, adjudication, vehicle information, drug-recognition experts, and other relevant sources to be linked or federated in a manner that supports querying. This data flow has been identified as the ideal path and can provide insight on aggregate data across multiple jurisdiction levels, such as the number of citations issued statewide or within a specific county or the number of convictions in a given year, as well as more detailed statistics such as counts of first‑time and repeat offenders.

While the complete database is being built, the TRCC has developed a dashboard to consolidate published DWI metrics as a first step.
